Gatekeeper’s Museum in Tahoe City to host Black Bear Brunch

TAHOE CITY, Calif. – Anyone who has spent much time in the Tahoe Basin is aware of the Black Bear, our local indigenous inhabitant and, at times, local celebrity. Popular myths abound, but few know Black Bears as well as State Park Ranger Brian Barton, who will be sharing his expertise this Friday, July 15, at noon at the Gatekeeper’s Museum for the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society’s Black Bear Brunch.

Barton is a bear biologist by education and training, and in his current position with CA State Parks, deals with Black Bears frequently. At Friday’s talk he’ll explain the mindset of our ursine neighbors, and provide tips to optimize bear – human interactions. He’ll also explain how CA State Park rangers are working to “train” bears to avoid people-intensive areas such as campgrounds, and describe a new research project taking place in the basin with the goal of learning more about the bears’ natural behaviors. Perhaps best of all, he’ll answer all our questions about Black Bears! Barton is also planning to bring a bear hide-from a bear that was killed by a car-so children and families can have a safe “up close and personal” encounter with a real bear (hide).

The Black Bear Brunch starts at noon at the Gatekeeper’s Museum, next to Fanny Bridge in Tahoe City. Suggested donations are $5 for North Lake Tahoe Historical Society members and $10 for non-members. All proceeds support NLTHS museums and educational and interpretive programs. Please RSVP to the Gatekeeper’s Museum so they can plan appropriately. For more information, please contact the Gatekeeper’s Museum at 530-583-1762.
