Girls on the Run andamp;#8211; Sierras announces New Balance 5K and 10K Fun Run
TRUCKEE, Calif. andamp;#8212; Girls on the Run andamp;#8211; Sierras announced its New Balance 5K and new 10K Fun Run will take place on June 5, 2011 at the Truckee River View Sports Park. The nonprofit organization has added a 10K option to encourage greater participation among the community, including more dedicated runners. Additional new offerings include family and corporate team rates. Runners of all ages are encouraged enjoy this family-friendly community event. andamp;#8220;Weandamp;#8217;re really excited about the addition of the 10K run and are encouraging men, women and families to come out and run, or even hop, skip or jump across the finish line,andamp;#8221; said Danielle Rees, executive director of Girls on the Run andamp;#8211; Sierras. andamp;#8220;This fun and inspiring event supports a local nonprofit that builds strength and confidence in area girls.andamp;#8221; Girls on the Run is an afterschool program for third to eighth grade girls that teaches self-respect and healthy living through running. The spring 2011 season marks the eighth season of the program in the Tahoe Truckee community. Girls on the Run is offered in the spring and fall at: Alder Creek Middle School, Boys andamp; Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe, Glenshire Elementary, Incline Elementary School, North Tahoe School, Rideout Community Center, Truckee Elementary and the Bijou Boys andamp; Girls Club in South Lake Tahoe. The 10-week curriculum addresses all aspects of a girlandamp;#8217;s development, including physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being, and culminates with the 5K fun run for which girls build up all season. andamp;#8220;Girls on the Run is so much fun!andamp;#8221; said Kymberlee, an 11-year-old Girls on the Run participant. andamp;#8220;When we run the 5k and I see (my coaches) waiting for us at the finish line and I think, andamp;#8216;Yes, I made it.andamp;#8217;andamp;#8221;
WHAT: 5K and 10K runs, music, games and a barbecue. Fun for all!WHEN: Sunday, June 5, 2011. Pre-race festivities will start at 9 a.m., with the 10K run kicking off at 9:30 a.m. and the 5K at 10 a.m. A barbecue lunch will immediately follow the run.WHERE: Truckee River View Sports Park, 12200 Joerger Drive, Truckee (near the Truckee airport)COST: Pre-registration prices: $20 for 5K; $30 for 10K. Children 5-12 are $10 and families of four are $50. Corporate teams of five are $75 for the 5K, and $100 for the 10K. All registrants receive a Girls on the Run T-shirt and goodie bag. Barbecue tickets are $5.Pre-registration is available online at http://www.girlsontherunsierras.org. Race day registration will also be available.
Girls on the Run andamp;#8211; Sierras is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls age 8-13-years-old in the Tahoe Truckee Community. The programs combine training for a 5K running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goal of the program is to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development. Girls on the Run andamp;#8211; Sierras is always looking for new volunteers to help with race day or run with a girl as a running buddy.
