Group brings local women together for empowerment

When Vivi Sabol, owner of Truckees Unique Boutique, moved to town in 1991, she said she felt very alone. She needed a sisterhood, of sorts, that would provide good conversation and for a sounding board for new business ideas. But it wasnt until February that Sabol discovered the North Tahoe & Truckee Women Empowering Women Association. It was just the outlet she was looking for. The Women Empowering Women Association, which was launched by Truckee residents Jeannine Karnofsky and Julee Jobe, aims to connect women with new contacts, ideas and visions that will help members to better themselves, their businesses and their homes. One of the most important parts of the group is meeting like-minded friends; people who are interested in the community and building a foundation of women who are like sisters, Jobe said. We want to develop our potential as women in our community; to be the very best that we can be, and many of us need a helping hand to get to that point. The association will meet monthly for networking luncheons that host educational and motivational speakers, business owners, athletes and community leaders. Its a way to get women exposed to things they can accomplish or overcome, said Terry Mays, a Truckee resident and massage therapist who joined the group as a way to put her ideas and resources for community development to work. Its not just about any special charity, its a self empowerment that will benefit the community over all.
