TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. – Red lips and waves? Can it already be that time of year? The holidays are just about in full swing which of course means the return of the holiday party. Whether you wear your hair up or down – waves are where it’s at. From soft waves to finger waves and shiny waves to brushed- out waves, this is definitely the time to rock a more 1920s Hollywood look.

Whichever type of wave you chose a curling wand, iron or hot rollers are definitely suggested to achieve soft and sexy waves. Even if you already have curly or wavy hair these tools help give more control and form to the hair. Also note, generally, hair is easier to work with when washed the day or night before. Most hairstylists call it “second day” hair, and it is preferred to work with when creating a more coiffed style. With hair powder and dry shampoos such as Bumble and Bumbles Hair Powder, Big Sexy Hairs Powder Play and Lulu Organics Hair Powder, the hair will have better texture and any oil on the scalp will be absorbed. (It’s not a bad idea to get in the habit of using a dry shampoo weekly since daily washing can fade color and dry out hair. Not to mention, it will cut out at least 30 minutes of the morning routine allotting for other commitments … such as shoveling the driveway). Let your inner movie-star shine with “soft waves” formed by hot rollers set in hair that has already been blown out with a styling cream or gel, later brushed out and sprayed with a light-hold hair spray.

Finger waves are a timeless classic set in a light malleable styling gel; however they are not easy to do on oneself and may require the help of a professional.

Shiny waves are a classic look on long, healthy hair that has been curled away from the face and finished with a shine, or mending product like Moroccan Oil, Bumble and Bumbles Hairdressers Oil and Oribes Apres Beach Wave and Shine Spray.

Brushed-out waves are created by using the iron or wand below the cheekbone on the lower part of the hair which gives an effortless look. With so many options there are limitless creations and any of the down styles can easily be pinned up with a jeweled or metallic barrette or worn back in a stylish head band.

Be sure to finish off the look with some dazzling red lips. Sophia Panych of Allure recommends Dolce and Gabbana The Lipstick in Ultra, Clarins Joli Rouge Long Wearing Mousturizing Lipstick in Plum and Nars Lipstick in Scarlet.

Tips and Tricks

Hair ornaments have really made a presence and why not, they are whimsical and fun. Recently I was at a local coffee bar and one of the baristas had an amazing knit wrap with sparkles, beads and feathers playfully wrapped around her messy hair creating a total mountain glam up-do. I thought it was the most perfect accessory for bed head, especially on a cold mountain morning. I picked mine up at Charming Charlie but they seem to be big sellers and can be found online at (Gimme Couture at target.com, etsy.com, and of course thefind.com).
