Hair it is!
Special to the Sun
TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Going, going, gone! As we say goodbye to summer and get geared up for fall, hair is one accessory that wonand#8217;t be left out. Although itand#8217;s not considered and#8220;fall fashionand#8221; according to Catherine Piercy of Vogue, the bob has taken the runway of New York Fashion Week (spring collection) by storm. More and more celebrities and models are and#8220;shedding their long, anonymous hair for something more memorable.and#8221;
As for hair color, from deep eggplant to soft violet, purple is the hot color right now. Not into a purple bob? The great part about this falland#8217;s trends are that from pretty and natural to funky and fun: Almost anything goes.
If getting into the salon this summer for the ever fashionable Ombre hairstyle was a challenge thereand#8217;s no doubt the sun provided a and#8220;naturaland#8221; version. (Ombre is a French word for shading. When referring to hair color itand#8217;s usually dark at the root and gradually fades to light at the ends.) Chances are with a darker complexion the lightness looks good today, but as soon as a tan begins to fade the lighter hair color may wash out certain skin tones. Painting in a few different color lowlights to keep the color balanced or keeping the ends lighter and applying a rich toner will help give hair more depth, shine and an overall healthier appearance. The great thing about toners is they are a semi-permanent color which means they typically only last about four-six weeks. With less commitment there is more opportunity to have fun and try something new.
Perhaps itand#8217;s time to try a dip-dye? A dip-dye is a more dramatic version of the Ombre that has also been rocking the runway. Instead of shading lightness into the ends of the hair they look as though they have been dipped (usually with a fun bright color and#8212; purple?). There are several more non-committal options for the DIY artist: chalk (haircolorchalks.com); powder (pressed pigments from Color Smash); mists (Kryolanand#8217;s Color Sprays) all of which wash out relatively easily and shouldnand#8217;t stain the hair. Bright ends sticking out of a classic newsboy or oversized faux fur hat will look absolutely amazing.
Tips and tricks
As the seasons change so do the needs of your hair. Living in the high altitude of Lake Tahoe will certainly take a toll on the texture of your hair. Whether itand#8217;s from the sun or a stylist, highlighting has a tendency to dry out hair. If a moisturizing shampoo and deep conditioner arenand#8217;t a part of your hair regime, now is a great time to add them. As the seasons progress the air will become dryer. The cold dry winter air will contribute to summer sun damage. In addition to a moisturizing shampoo and deep conditioner a good investment is a weekly hair masque. Many brands have a weekly hair masque for dry or damaged hair: Bumble and Bumbles has Creme de Coco, Deeep, Quenching and Mending Masque, Oribes Signature Moisture Masque. A moisturizing hair masque will help put moisture back into dry hair while a mending hair masque will help rebuild a damaged follicle with natural proteins. Keep in mind these products will not completely repair serious damage and as wonderful as they are the best cure for split ends is (at the very least) a seasonal trim. Be sure to ask a local stylist what they recommend. Many salons carry exclusive deep conditioning masques.
