High Schoolers push for big concert turnout

For tonight’s winter concert, the Tahoe Truckee High School band members are expecting a larger crowd than any past concert.

The reason? Advertising.

A four-person crew of band members – Cody Brouwers, Kellie Conway, Kate MacKenzie and Emma Shaffer – contacted the media and placed posters around campus to entice more than the usual suspects (parents of band members) to come out for the concert.

“It’s something to do on a Wednesday night in Truckee,” said MacKenzie, a sophomore at Truckee High. “We just want to get the community out.”

It’s the first time students have tried to promote a concert in at least 14 years, Brouwers said.

“We want to fill up the auditorium to give people the gift of music,” he said.

The program for this year’s winter concert is also unique.

Truckee High has 42 band members in three groups – a concert band (mostly freshmen), a symphonic band and a jazz band – which will play holiday tunes. In addition, the symphonic band will play a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers’ flight at Kitty Hawk. The jazz band will also perform some more challenging pieces that the students will play at an upcoming competition.

In addition to the music, there may be a visit from Branca Claus (Truckee High Vice Principal Bill Branca). There will be a bake sale to raise funds for next year’s band tour.
