Special to the Sun

TRUCKEE, Calif. – Have you ever wondered how to be a better emotional coach for your children? Or how to help your student behave in a way that meets society’s expectations? Do you want people to think the best of your child? Are you interested in the role of emotions and reaction to those emotions that impact relationships and parenting skills? At Fostering Your Child’s EQ, an interactive session for parents and early childhood providers presented by Custom Learning Academy’s Lisa Crosby, M.Ed., Jan. 29, 5:30-7 p.m. attendees will gain insights on the role emotions play in life and strategies for being healthy emotional coaches. “Family life is our first school for emotional learning. In this intimate cauldron we learn how to feel about ourselves and how others will react to our feelings; how to think about these feelings and what choices we have in reacting; how to read and express hopes and fears,” writes Daniel Goleman, an internationally recognized psychologist and author of the best-selling book “Emotional Intelligence.””This emotional schooling operates not just through the things parents say and do directly, but also in the models they offer for handling their own feelings and those that pass between husband and wife. Some parents are gifted emotional teachers, others atrocious,” Goleman adds.Fostering your child’s EQ The researched-backed presentation at the KidZone Children’s Museum in Truckee will include parent-friendly techniques, examples and time for Q&A.
