If Republicans had any brainsmaybe they could write a book

It defies explanation. I write a column about the meaning of life and nobody responds. I write a column about petty politics and people come out of the woodwork to put in their two cents worth. Does that mean life revolves around petty politics? Last weeks Soup came in second on the Sierra Sun Web site with 11 responses, a record number, but whos keeping track? About half supported my column, and about half were way off point, so they dont count. They were interesting, as way off point rebuttals always are. Thanks to everyone who commented, especially KF, whoever that is.I was at The Bookshelf in Tahoe City browsing through Republican Ann Coulters new book. It was nothing more than a collection of jokes. Apparently, Ann gathered quotes and anecdotes from a number of sources, most not her own, arranged them in order of topics, printed them and is now laughing all the way to the bank. Thats not what I call writing a book, Ann. The title is, If Democrats had any brains theyd be Republicans. If Ann Coulter had any brains, shed be a nun. If I had any brains, I wouldnt think she is such a fox. I sent her a personal note and a copy of one of my columns last year, hoping to entice her into responding. She never did, but I ended up on her mailing list. I received a post card advertising her new book. See, all she wants is my money. I wasnt suckered in. I put the book back on the shelf, saved myself 30 bucks and gained something much more valuable the satisfaction of revenge. So much for being attracted to a tall, lanky, quick-witted, rich, steely-eyed, pale, white chick in a revealing black dress (as she appears on her book). Never judge a book by its cover. Maybe I should just bless clever Ann and send her good cosmic vibrations through the ether. I could organize a special Hands Around Lake Tahoe for her. Yeah, that would warm up her cold, Republican heart.No. What Ann Coulter needs is a good insult. At least I know she can handle it.Some people think its not nice to challenge opposing viewpoints with hyperbole and gusto. I can see their point, but whats not nice is being silent and leaving people stranded in their ignorance. If you cant stand the heat, get out of the locker room. At least Ann, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage and others only engage in verbal attacks. American society, to a large extent, was built on physical violence and murder. Powerful people got away with murdering innocent citizens for demanding fair wages and a better life. Just look at the violent history of coal miners and labor unions. Tough talk is better than violence, but well revert back to violence sooner or later, Im sure of it. We are more human than we are American.Who said life was fair? As long as human beings have a right to express their opinions, there will be a political gutter for us all to play in with our squeaky rubber duckies. There is a serious lack of verbal restraint in the discourse of both political parties, but its not easy for people with strong opinions to restrain themselves. Why should they? In this country we allow each other to be human, and to speak freely. Dont you?Responses to tough talk and creative insults reveal true character. Without them, how could we choose a strong president? Reporters are too chicken to ask candidates real insulting questions like, You dont really care about the truth, all you want is to be president, right? or, Are you insane?Even tougher personal questions could thin out the herd for both Democrat and Republican presidential hopefuls. If we are too nice we could end up with Oprah as president. She would give us everything we want, which would ruin the country.Bob Sweigert is a Sierra Sun columnist, published poet, experienced ski instructor and commercial driver.
