Jordan’s Tea Room offers desserts, espresso, atmosphere

“Many restaurants have a wine list, we have a tea list,” said Janice Jones, manager at the recently opened Jordan’s Tea Room.

The tea room, located in the historic Kruger White House, offers guests a selection of 12 unique teas to choose from, as well as a wide variety of pastries, breakfast and lunch items, all prepared by Chef Sarah Lovald.

Lovald, a pastry chef who graduated the Culinary Institute of America and has worked for a number of top restaurants, has already made a name for herself locally by taking top honors at the annual Tahoe Women’s Services Chocolate Festival in November.

“The chocolate festival was like a slam dunk for her … she was really confident going in,” Jones said.

Both Jones and Jordan’s owner Cindy Lauper expect Lovald’s desserts will be a big draw for the tea room, which will also offer beignets, pies, cakes and the chance to sit down and experience high tea, served with an authentic china tea set.

They also hope to start catering parties and other events around town.

Lauper, who also owns the soon-to-be-open Piper’s Patisserie, planned to use the kitchen facilities at the tea room to help stock Piper’s with fresh baked breads and pastries, and she said she thought “Why not sell those baked goods here, too?”

To spice things up a little, the tea room also features a number of “Southern regional” dishes on its menu with influences from New Orleans and Cuba.

Both Lauper and Jones love wine, as is evidenced by the tea room’s continually evolving wine list, and espresso and coffee drinkers will be able to order their favorite beverages, as well.

And while the foot traffic around the Kruger White house is not as great as further down the road on Commercial Row, the tea room has been getting a number of customers who came by to shop at the many other businesses located in the building.

Jordan’s Tea Room is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, with a three-course champagne brunch offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays.

The Kruger White House is located on the north side of Donner Pass Road just west of Commercial Row.
