TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Father Time keeps marching on, leaving his inevitable mark upon oneand#8217;s face. Whatand#8217;s a young-at-heart party girl to do? Well, now thereand#8217;s a non-invasive, quick fix called Juvederm Plus, the latest generation of injectable fillers. These fillers, made of hyaluronic acid, a substance normally found in skin, muscles and tendons of mammals, are used by dermatologists and cosmetic medical specialists to soften facial creases, fill wrinkles, improve the appearance of depressed scars, and restore or add volume to cheeks and lips.

Since the introduction of and#8220;medi-spaand#8221; facilities, these procedures are becoming more and more accessible to the average person who is looking to improve his or her appearance. The upside is that there is no downtime, and the procedure can literally be completed during a lunch hour! Juvederm injections last anywhere between 12 and 18 months, but an added bonus is the injections also cause collagen remodeling under the skin which creates longer-lasting results. Collagen remodeling is a phenomenon caused by the stimulation of the fibroblasts (the cells that make collagen) in the skin by any filler.

Recently, I decided to give Juvederm Plus a try. I booked an appointment at Sierra Cosmetic Laser in Truckee with Christine Geis, RN. In addition to 20 years of nursing experience, Geis has been an esthetics nurse specialist for the past five years, and has attended numerous medical seminars perfecting the new techniques for administering hyaluronic acid fillers for face and lips.

Having witnessed a lot of unnatural looking women sporting overly plump and#8220;fish lipsand#8221; I was a bit wary of having any procedure that would scream and#8220;fake.and#8221; Geis assured me I would be happy with the subtle results. First she applied lidocaine, a numbing cream, to the areas where she would inject the Juvederm plus into my nasolabial folds (those smile lines or parentheses), as well as my upper and lower lips. After about 15 minutes I was numb, but just enough to make the procedure more painless

Ice was applied to those areas as well. Then she injected me with a syringe of Juvederm Plus with a very tiny needle which I did not even feel! Thatand#8217;s because the new Juvederm Plus has lidocaine mixed in with it, so you donand#8217;t feel the filler going into the skin at all. She filled in the deep smile lines which several injections, then on to my upper lip where she injected the Juvederm underneath both sides of my upper lip, then injected my lower lip on both sides. Because my upper lip plumped up a bit, those vertical lines above the lip magically became less noticeable!-

There are some slight side effects that go away within a few days after the procedure: Redness, swelling, and some bruising (I did bruise about the size of a round paper hole punch on my lip.) Taking arnica Montana orally several days before the procedure as well as after alleviates some of the minor swelling.

Afterward, friends did not notice anything different about my appearance unless I mentioned something, as the results were subtle and natural-looking. So the next time you want to look a little younger or refreshed for either a special event or for everyday, just say and#8220;fill and#8216;er upand#8221; with Juvederm Plus at Sierra Cosmetic Laser.
