Amy Edgett/Sierra Sun

TRUCKEE, Calif. andamp;#8212; Laura Mohun radiates cheer with a big smile, rosy cheeks and can-do attitude. Raised in a church family, Laura is a Christian whose being is about helping others. Her dedication to service is apparent: She teaches Sunday school, served on the Alder Creek Middle School PTO, has been a Girl Scout Leader for nine years, was part of the original committee that helped name and create the Sierra Teen Education andamp; Parenting Program, and was involved in recreating the youth arm of Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner: The S-Club at Sierra Continuation High School. In an unprecedented move, the Soroptimist will honor a member with the Woman of Distinction Award, Oct. 21, 6:30-8 p.m. with hors dandamp;#8217;oeuvres and beverages. The award honors women who andamp;#8212; through their professional or personal activities andamp;#8212; make extraordinary efforts on behalf of women and girls. The club has recognized women in the community through this award since 1984, a localized interpretation of the Soroptimist Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women.andamp;#8220;She is definitely inspirational,andamp;#8221; said S-Club advisor and School Counselor Debbi Spohr. andamp;#8220;I have never heard her say thatandamp;#8217;s impossible. She says andamp;#8216;Letandamp;#8217;s see how we can make that workandamp;#8217;.andamp;#8221;Students at Sierra High face particular challenges. andamp;#8220;They are often (teen mothers) trying to get babies and bodies to school,andamp;#8221; said Laura. She took the faltering S-Club to Sierra High about five years ago, knowing service to others is empowering, that it offers a look at the bigger world and beyond. Some projects include volunteering at the Truckee Tahoe Humane Society as pet socializers, making pet adopt me vests, sending feminine products and underwear to India so young women can attend school every week, purchasing mosquito netting, donating to the Tahoe Womenandamp;#8217;s Services safe house, paying for senior lunches and financing a college student for two years in Cambodia, who will graduate this year.Mohun selected her education and profession, physical therapy, with raising a family in mind. Her flexible schedule at Truckee Physical Therapy allowed her to be both a hands-on mom and powerful role model for her two daughters. andamp;#8220;I love what I do, I get paid to help people feel better,andamp;#8221; she said.Mohun purchased the business five years ago. Her leadership in volunteer positions gave her a stepping stone for running the business, which she does with a consensus management style.andamp;#8220;There was some moaning and groaning at first,andamp;#8221; Spohr said of the initial management requirements at the S-Club. andamp;#8220;Our kids never had an organized club.andamp;#8221;Laura helped with the nuts and bolts, getting the students to take notes, fund raise and appropriate the proceeds. andamp;#8220;She let them decide from their hearts,andamp;#8221; said Spohr.Mohun is proud of the S-Club, and the health of Soroptimist International of Truckee-Donner, which has the highest growth and retention in North and South America.Laura likes to fly below the radar, commenting she is not one to create sustainable projects. She likens her skill set to being andamp;#8220;the glueandamp;#8221; that holds things together, to oversee projects to successful end results, sticking with the motto andamp;#8220;see a problem, solve a problem.andamp;#8221;andamp;#8220;If you look at this community, a large percentage of business are owned by women,andamp;#8221; said Laura. andamp;#8220;There are many opportunities. In politics, lots of women are running for office.andamp;#8221;The 2010 Soroptimist Woman of Distinction will keep on running. andamp;#8220;If you want something done, ask a busy person. Thatandamp;#8217;s me,andamp;#8221; Mohun said. For information about the 2010 Woman of Distinction reception, call Dianne Fix at 530-906-3111. For Soroptimist information, visit
