Law Review: The costs of a war on terrorism will be very high

Jim Porter, Sierra Sun Columnist

I am having difficulty handling the devastating attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C.

I generally sleep like a baby and can focus non-stop on my work duties at the law firm, but my nights and days are constantly interrupted now revisiting the horrors we have all witnessed, and the troubling question of what happens next.

As a lawyer, I know we can’t strip away the personal rights each of us enjoys, protections from an overbearing government – mandated by the Constitution. But on the other hand, the rules of engagement dramatically changed on Tuesday.

The tyrants and their supporters will be stopped by force and at considerable expense to our country. The freedoms and conveniences we enjoy will be modified, but not removed. We have the resolve to defend our homeland.

The United States is at a distinct disadvantage if it plays by the rules while the enemy has no rules – or conscience. And who is the enemy?

The enemy is not Muslims or the Afghan people. There is a poignant letter making the e-mail circuit I would like to share. It doesn’t answer the question of what specific action we should take, but it sheds light on what we shouldn’t do.

I invite your comments.
