Learning from our readers
This September, the Sierra Sun is forming a reader panel. Editor, Jim Scripps and myself would like to invite individuals interested in serving on a reader panel to apply.
The concept is not new. A number of newspapers have reader panels and regularly tap them for ideas, critical analysis and education on issues. Our reader panel will be no different.
We’re seeking people truly willing to be involved. The business of publishing a community newspaper is a vast and varied landscape of responsibility. It includes covering local issues thoroughly, accurately and completely. We believe a reader panel will serve as an added resource to complete coverage.
We’re looking for people willing to share opinions, evaluate story ideas, critique design and lend an educated view or guidance on issues. The panel will meet once a month for 60-90 minutes. We’re asking for a commitment of six months, at which time a new panel will rotate in. The panel will consist of 10-12 volunteers (you), hopefully representing a cross-section of the Truckee population. Diversity is a good thing. Various viewpoints are welcome.
This is a project I am personally enthusiastic about. Malcolm Forbes said, “Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one,” and it’s so true. Education will be a large part of this endeavor.
As a relative newcomer to the community, I’m constantly learning, being educated (or schooled in some cases). It will be an opportunity to expand my knowledge of past issues, get to know a few more of you and ensure our continued outreach to the readers – important aspects of the newspaper’s mission.
Please consider submitting an application. The rotating panel will allow a number of readers to be involved.
If you are interested in serving on the Reader Panel, please send an email to email@example.com or a letter to Sierra Sun, c/o Jody Poe, P.O. Box 2973, Truckee, CA 96160 with the following information:
Name, Address, Phone, Occupation, Status (Married, Single, Children), your overall impression of the newspaper, why you want to serve on the Sierra Sun reader panel, what you hope to accomplish by being part of the panel
Just a few lines will do. We don’t need a complete biography, just a sense of you and why you’re interested in serving.
