Letter to the Editor: America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride causing serious problems for Lake Tahoe

As a long-time cyclist and member of the Lake Tahoe community, I wish to express my sincere irritation and dissatisfaction with the arrogant and misdirected attitudes of the majority of participants in America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride.

Year after year, cyclists in this event go out of their way to ride five across in packs, not only refusing to move even a bit to the side to allow a vehicle to pass but doing so with a militant attitude designed to exhibit a feeling of traffic control.

This is causing problems in our community in that many people are turning to violent gestures and attitudes. I have personally witnessed motor vehicles pulling strange and crazy movements in an effort to pass the groups who just won’t consider anything resembling single file riding.

I love cycling but never look forward to your event. It is causing serious problems that likely result in increased danger for both cyclists and motorists.

Please consider using your own cycling monitors in order to prevent accidents, irritation and other “Cycle vs MVA” issues before someone gets seriously injured in an event that could be fun and healthy for all. In lieu of such monitors, I would suggest discontinuing this event in the interest of public safety.
