Letter to the Editor: County should not OK Crystal Bay land swap

I recently learned that Dave Duffield, owner of Nevada Pacific Development Corporation, has proposed to Washoe County a land swap that would convey to his corporation a County Right of Way on Somers Loop in Crystal Bay that provides access to a sandy cove on the lake shore. A separate abandonment proposal in 2007 was denied because it would reduce public access to the lake.

This proposal should also be denied, for the same reason. There is almost no other public access to the lake in Crystal Bay, only a few overgrown, steep, unmarked easements. Access to the Nevada Lands-owned lakefront at the bend in Gonowabie Road has been closed off. Residents of Crystal Bay do not have access to the Incline Village beaches. I urge Washoe County to maintain this valuable access to the lake for the public.
