It concerns me that the town of Incline Village has only one large grocery store and a specialty market. There are more than a few lower income families living in the community, and the cost of groceries is high.

I cannot imagine having a family and being unable to buy healthy foods for them. It’s possible to save some money by driving down the hill to Carson City or even to Reno, but when you account for the cost of transportation, not much is being saved. Do all of these families have cars? Can they find time between work and taking care of their responsibilities to catch a bus?

There needs to be more healthy affordable options in Incline Village. It is easy to stop by a gas station or 7-Eleven and pick up some sugar-filled concoction because it is cheap, but it’s not filling or healthy.

I think a good option would be for IVGID to begin a program that involves local kids and starts a community garden. The produce grown can go to the families and the children will have the opportunity to learn about eating healthy. The community should become involved and help provide healthy affordable food for those who need it.
