Letter to the Editor: IVGID board made right call to table utility rate increase

I commend the IVGID Trustees for its recent action at least temporarily tabling the IVGID Utilities Department’s request for a rate increase. It seems quite clear that the Director of Public Works failed to justify the reason or need for another water rate increase, especially coming in the middle of a recession and on the heels of another recently approved increase.

There is a nagging suspicion I have heard voiced by many residents that revenues from mandatory IVGID services such as utilities are directly and indirectly subsidizing other revenue- strapped, discretionary venues and providing money for bonuses. This is allegedly accomplished through creative accounting, questionable transfers of funds, and other financial legerdemain.

Perhaps the Trustees should commission some independent forensic accounting services to confirm or dispel this belief, rather than relying on fancy but possibly self-serving Power Point presentations, before approving any further rate increases.
