Letter to the Editor: Johnston for TDPUD

Doug Grandy
Truckee

I am writing this letter to recommend that the voters of the Truckee Donner Public Utility District vote for Bob Johnston.

I was the Chairman of the TDPUD’s Citizen’s Conservation Advisory Committee that was appointed by the current Board in the wake of the controversy surrounding the coal contract. We spent a year developing the comprehensive Water and Power Conservation Plan.

During this time, Bob Johnston served as a resource to the Committee generally, and to me in particular. Occasionally I needed someone with Bob’s depth of knowledge to bounce around ideas and provide a reality check on our work. His advice and insight was always helpful and constructive, and I never found his counsel lacking in any way. He was the only member of the public to actively participate in the work of the Committee.

Having taught Energy Policy and Environmental Science and Technology at UC Davis, Professor Johnston is clearly well qualified to be on the board. He has also been on the Truckee Planning Commission for four years, and served on a number of other groups to use his knowledge and skills for the betterment of the Truckee community. The district is fortunate to have a candidate of his caliber.

The district is doing its job much better now, and is moving in a very positive direction, but still has a long way to go. Would you be surprised to learn that the electricity you use is basically from coal? The world in which electric utilities operate is changing rapidly and is receiving global attention, and this trend will only accelerate. In my opinion, the board and the district will benefit from having a member with this expertise.

Bob Johnston is such a person, and I urge you to vote for him.
