Letter to the Editor: Measure R is a win-win-win

As June 3 approaches and the Measure R campaign comes to a close, one thing is abundantly clear. Not once has anyone ever come out and said that a community connected safely by trails and bikeways is a bad idea. No one.

It stands to reason, because community-wide surveys and polls conducted over the past 20 years have shown that residents want more trails than any other recreational amenity.

Why is that? Because trails just makes sense. It just makes sense that a close-knit, family oriented town grounded in outdoor recreation and an economy dependent on summer visitation provides the most fundamental opportunity: to safely walk or bike wherever you want to go.

Walk to school, safely. Ride your bike to work, safely. Take a trail to get out in the open space we all live here to enjoy. While you’re doing that, save on gas and give your heart a little workout. It’s a win-win-win.

For only 25 cents of every $100 spent on taxable items (most groceries are exempt), with the visiting public paying a significant portion of the revenue, we will quickly see our community transform into one that is healthier, safer, more economically robust, and quite simply, more livable. It just makes sense.

All funds from Measure R will stay in Truckee, guaranteed. A public oversight committee will be established to oversee expenditures.

Please join the Truckee Trails Foundation along with 20 other local organizations, over 60 local businesses, and countless individuals who agree Measure R makes sense. Vote yes on R!
