Letter to the editor: Open letter to Truckee/Tahoe parents

Michael Rogers

We as a community are in the midst of a very difficult and painful budget process for our beloved school system. We have wrenching decisions to make and we are all feeling vulnerable.

However, there is a disturbing thread of thought that has been given voice by a few parents regarding the closing of Donner Trail School. The clear impression is that Donner Trail is somehow taking their precious resources away from their children and that those parents want that money back to protect the education of their kids.

The Donner Summit community is proud to provide close to $4 million dollars in tax support for the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District as a benefit to the education of all the children of our community (even though we have a small school age population).

As a Donner Summit business, Shinneyboo Creek Cabins pays $3,000 per year in support and we are happy to do it.

We respectfully ask you to support our right to educate our youngest kids close to their homes in a neighborhood elementary school, at minimal relative cost to the District, so that 5-, 6-, and 7-year-old kids do not have to spend two hours a day being bused to school.

We have welcomed Truckee kids into our school so that the facility could be run more efficiently, and the dedicated staff has created a dynamic, age and socio-economically diverse program alternative that is a documented benefit for kids who have not thrived in other environments.

Kindergarten slots are competitive, but fairly distributed, and many parents who want to get in the program, and accept mid-year transfers, are able to enroll. Donner Trail is an incredible asset to the District that pays its own way, not a burden.
