It is becoming more clear that a BevMo! is potentially moving to town. This concerns me very much.

We have seen time and again what big corporate retailers do to small towns. They put local businesses out of business, replace those living wage jobs with minimum wage jobs and funnel money out of the community and into the pockets of CEOs elsewhere.

This compounds our housing problem and employment problems, creating low wage jobs that nobody in Truckee can take because they do not cover the rent in a month. It also skews commercial real estate upward, again making it harder for the small businessman to get a toehold.

The Sierra Sun article earlier this month referenced the footprint of the store being shrunk and the facade enhanced to meet the town’s requirements that they not be a “big box store.” Well, they still are.

Unrelated to any of those things, we already have Safeway, Rite Aid and Zander’s within 1,000 yards of the proposed location! How much alcohol does a small town need in a square quarter mile? I have already contacted the ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control) about it and they recognized that this potentially infringes on regulations already in place regarding density of alcoholic beverage distribution points in a town of our size.

In conclusion, I do not feel that this is an appropriate fit for Truckee. If you have similar concerns, please contact Kirk Skierski, town planner at 530-582-2927.
