Letter to the editor: PUDs should show due diligence on finances
There has been a lot said and written concerning the special districts in the Truckee-Tahoe areas of service, from manager salaries, to rate increases, and a score of other special district issues.
What this country is facing now in our economy is the worst ever in American history. Everyone is being asked to tighten up, cut back, whatever it takes to hopefully recharge our economy.
It isn’t just us in our communities at local levels. It’s everywhere. I can say that when I was on the Truckee Donner Public Utility District, we all worked hard to put things back together and create new policies and procedures. I can tell you that the management and employees of the Truckee Donner Public Utility District are good, hard-working people, and so are the Board of Directors.
They are playing the hand they have been dealt, and hopefully it isn’t aces-and-eights. Are they going to proceed with new salary negotiations? Or are they going to stand at ease with where they are to show the people that they too are aware of how bad things are?
I spoke with the general manager of the Tahoe City PUD, and she informed me that she turned down a percentage increase last year, and intends to turn down another if the Board of Directors suggests one.
I think that if all the special districts in the Truckee-Tahoe area were to stand together united and show the communities that they too are willing to help out and tighten up, it would speak volumes to those of us suffering through this Great Depression.
