Letter to the editor: Support for incumbents
I have been asked by quite a few local people which candidates I support in the upcoming TTUSD Board election. We have two incumbents being challenged by two candidates who have been recruited and financed by the Tahoe Truckee Teacher’s Association (TTEA). When I was on the school board myself (1999-2006), I felt that TTEA was generally supportive of local board members. I myself was endorsed by TTEA in my campaign in 2002. I have also been a member of California Teacher’s Association employed 20-plus years in California schools. As a retired teacher/counselor I feel I have “walked the walk” on issues facing school site staffs.
This election I have seen a different approach from TTEA. It frankly has disturbed me to have candidates, whatever their personal merit, being financed by the local teacher’s union. A main responsibility of a local school board is to ensure the long-term financial health of the district. The board has the primary task of forming policies to guide this process.
Monty Folsom has been in Truckee for many years. He came to TTUSD as the business manager. He brings a wealth of knowledge of the local community, state finances, and our local district. He is the most knowledgeable person about finance on the current board. I have worked with Monty, value his advice and respect his integrity. If during the protracted negotiations with TTEA he was cautious, know that he had very good reasons for his views. Monty always prepares carefully. It would be valuable to keep someone of Monty’s caliber on the board of trustees.
Nancy Gisko has done an excellent job as a recent board appointee. Nancy came to TTUSD after serving as a trustee in Belmont Shores and bringing a considerable expertise in curriculum change from her work in that district. She has worked extremely well with the existing Board. I trust her judgment.
A member of the board of trustees has a steep learning curve to be an effective member. I am supporting both incumbents, Monty Folsom and Nancy Gisko for reelection.
