Letter to the Editor: Tahoe Unleashed dog park, just the facts

In a recent Sierra Sun article, it was mentioned that the new dog park, named Tahoe Unleashed, in the North Tahoe Regional Park, has an anticipated cost of $400,000.

Who would have thought giving our pets and visitors’ pets a safe place to play would cost so much? Of course when it comes to our four-legged furry family members most of us would say, “Whatever it costs, money will not be an obstacle!”

How could installing a few hundred yards of fencing with a couple of gates, some drinking fountains and a few park benches be so expensive?

We thought you might be asking yourself those very same questions, and we just happen to have the answers for you! The costs directly related to a completed dog park equate to $120,000. Of these costs, Dog Day in the Park has agreed to raise $62,000 of the necessary funds.

You also might be asking yourself, “What about the remaining $265,000?” The remaining costs are to be utilized in two specific areas involving the park’s infrastructure: (1) $157,000 for the materials and installation of a two-stall-heated ADA restroom, and (2) $108,00 is allocated to road improvements and ADA parking in the vicinity of the new dog park.

These latter improvements and additions will bring the Regional Park into compliance with ADA regulations. Of course, our entire community and visitors will benefit from these improvements/additions.

There you have it: the facts of the dog park, and just the facts! We hope over the coming months you all will partner with Dog Day in the Park and the NTPUD to help make our dog park a reality! With your help, we can make every day a dog day.
