Letter to the Editor: Things to think about regarding ‘Trail warfare’

Regarding Mr. Bourriague’s letter (Trail warfare), I would like to clarify one thing: 99.9 percent of motorized forest users respect non-motorized trails. As a motorized trail user I certainly do not want to ride on a “hiking only” trail.

Mr. Bourriague’s letter underscores a very important issue we are facing in the Tahoe National Forest and in national forests. As more and more land becomes closed to motorized use, so called “user conflict” is becoming an issue.

What we need in the Tahoe National Forest and all national forests is a comprehensive travel plan that includes all forest users. We need to add trails to our system. If we continue to increasingly restrict motorized use in our national forests, we will get pandemonium. There is enough room for all forest users. Many of us simply need to learn to share.

Our national forests have been and should always be “multi-use, useable to all Americans, not a just a few well-funded special interest groups.

One point ponder if you are a mountain biker, that trail you are riding was most likley created/used by an off-road motorcyclist well before mountain bikes were created. As is the case with 95 percent of the inventoried single track trails in our area.
