Letter to the Editor: Vote Yes on Measure R
Trails are an integral part of a mountain community. They allow us to get around town safely while walking or on a bicycle, allow us to access the beautiful open space around us, enable recreational opportunities for our children, and provide an alternative economic engine for a community dependent on mother nature (who doesn’t always cooperate in the winter).
For the last eight years, I have worked with the Truckee Trails Foundation to realize these goals. While we have had some great success — getting the Legacy Trail extended to Glenshire, providing a trail along Brockway Road as an alternative to walking in a busy street, working with Tahoe Donner to build an alternative to Northwoods Drive to access Commercial Row, connecting Pioneer Center to downtown, and providing a vital connection for the loop around Donner Lake — there are many other great opportunities and plans for a trail network in Truckee and in the region that are being planned (connecting Truckee to Tahoe City, Kings Beach and Reno, for example).
The public and private funding that we have used in the past for our successes is not going to be enough to fund our vision of a connected Truckee.
If you have visited other communities with great trail systems — Vail, Colorado Springs, Sun Valley — know that those communities all have funding for those trails through a dedicated stream of property tax revenues or sales tax revenues. Truckee needs the same thing.
Measure R will help us realize that vision. For a nominal increase in the sales tax, paid by all who shop here, we can raise $10 million to build and maintain trails.
Please vote Yes on June 3 to make Truckee a better place to live and visit.
