Letter to the Editor: What’s the true cost of snowmaking?

This letter is in response to the Tahoe Magazine article “Snowmaking: Lake Tahoe’s ‘insurance policy’”:

The issue of snowmaking is a very apparent fact that we must deal with every year around this time. Mother Nature does not always provide our resorts with adequate amounts of snow to please all the winter guests of Tahoe, but what are the consequences of making massive amounts of snow?

If the pattern of subpar winters continues, will we be forced to rely solely on theses snow making systems? These systems are found at every resort in the Tahoe basin and rely on vast quantities of electricity and water to obtain a decent amount of snow, not to mention the additives that are destine to drain into the lake as temperatures rise.

I can understand from an economic standpoint that local businesses rely on the influx of tourists, but is this worth the negative impacts we will face in the future caused by our need for snow?
