Matt Tucker: Truckee kids take climate change serious, demand action
Truckee youth taking control of their future
I had the pleasure today of witnessing Truckee kids taking control of their own destinies.
First, this morning (Sept. 20), I went to the University of Nevada Reno’s campus to support their Climate Strike event. Sadly, this event was sparsely attended. I was surprised to see so many UNR students stroll by without taking the time to stop and take part.
At noon, in welcome contrast, I joined in with the Truckee students who organized their own Climate Strike event on Donner Pass Road. It was a totally different experience.
There were scores of kids with handmade signs and they were enthusiastically engaged in chants. It was a very energetic but respectful event. After the somewhat dispiriting event at UNR in the morning, the Truckee students demonstrated that kids in Truckee are taking climate change seriously and are demanding action.
Go Truckee kids!
As a member of the local chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, I look forward to our October meeting with Rep. Tom McClintock’s office. I plan to bring some of these amazing student activists with me to let Tom’s staff know about this inspirational event.
