New Planning Commission member sought

To the editor:

One of the responsibilities of a Town Council member is to make an appointment to the Planning Commission. My current appointee, Arne Werchick, has served very capably for the past two years, but has recently announced his intention to resign the position. Arne will be wintering in warmer climes, and this does not allow for adequate participation on the commission. Arne has made a valuable contribution to the commission, and I commend and thank him for his effort.

At this point I am asking any member of the community who would be interested in the appointment to contact me. I have often said that the Planning Commission does the heavy lifting as we attempt to accommodate development while protecting the beautiful mountain community that we all care about. It is a significant position, with considerable responsibility, but one that can be very rewarding.

Anyone who would be interested should contact me at Town Hall, 582-7700, at my home, 587-3148, or by e-mail at spirit@mail.telis.org

Coverage of elections fair

To the editor:

I would like to thank the Sierra Sun for its very objective and balanced reporting of the recent elections. Some of the local issues, such as the election of the airport board members, were unusually contentious as each side tried to make its points known to the public.

I’m sure the Sun staff struggled with how to ensure the public was well-informed while emotions accelerated as we approached election day. The Sun articles that came out just prior to election day did a great job of pointing out the pros and cons of each of the major positions. The many letters that were submitted for publication during the weeks prior to the election were given fair and open access as well.

Thanks for helping the community with fair reporting.

Florida should be boycotted

To the editor:

Boycott Florida. Don’t go to Disney World; don’t drink Florida orange juice; don’t go on cruises that depart from or arrive at Florida ports; don’t take your RV to Florida; do spend your winters in Arizona; don’t leave your vote in your will; if over age 55, don’t risk the Florida lifestyle, you might develop a case of chads; give serious consideration to giving Florida to Cuba, they seem to be compatible with this Third World country.

The electoral process in Florida is unacceptable.
