Library will expand evening hours

Friends of the Library by Pam McAdoo

The Truckee Library will revise its hours beginning June 4. With increased demand for evening hours, the Library will now be open until 8 p.m. two days a week – on Mondays and Thursdays – and will open every day except Sunday at 10 a.m.

As materials and services have been substantially increased in the past few years, this seems like a good time to review the current services at the Library. The Library now has two computers with Internet connection via a rapid T1 line. Both are available for up to an hour a day per person. You may call the Library to sign up in advance for either a half-hour or an hour, or you can walk in and take your chances.

If neither computer is available, a third computer, which was purchased through the Gates Foundation, is available on a drop-in basis for 15-minute increments. The Gates Computer was purchased as a research resource for children, and has Encarta software in addition to an Internet connection.

The Library is continually updating its selection of Spanish language books for both children of all ages and adults, and has started a collection of videos in Spanish. The books in Spanish for adults include everything from classic literature by Mexican and Spanish authors to non-fiction titles on health, finances, and mechanics, and periodicals such as Cosmopolitan, Teen and Vanidades. The collection of Spanish books for children begins with board books, moving through the picture book genre up to classic literature and non-fiction titles.

New videos for children and adults, both fiction and non-fiction, continue to arrive daily. The extensive collection of books-on-tape also continues to grow. A large collection of children’s picture books, each packaged with an audio tape, is housed on a carousel by the front door.

When school classes tour the Library, I try to point out that library books belong to all of us, and are available to all community members. By the same token, the Library staff exists to serve the needs of the community.

If you have suggestions for improvements at the Library – be it different hours, books you’d like to see on the shelves, or programs that you feel would benefit the community – please tell the staff.
