Local service club to host youth trout derby in Truckee
TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Local children will have the opportunity to show off their fishing skills at the 22nd Annual Truckee Kids Trout Fishing Derby Saturday, July 17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cold Stream Pond behind Donner Memorial State Park.
Local sportsman and angler Bob Tilton founded the event 22 years ago with the vision to draw children to a sport they could pursue for a lifetime. He started the derby to give youth an option for healthy recreation while keeping them out of trouble.
and#8220;My goal was to get kids hooked on fishing, not on drugs,and#8221; Tilton said. and#8220;If we can get kids started in the right direction, we can make a difference. Thereand#8217;s so much water around the area, it would be a shame for kids not to fish.and#8221;
Tilton and his family are still one of the eventand#8217;s main sponsors, along with the Nevada County Fish and Game Commission and the Rotary Club of Truckee. The event is open to the public and is free for youngsters ages 12 and younger. Children should bring their own gear and tackle, although some may be available to borrow.
and#8220;The primary focus of the event is to let kids have fun and give them something they can do their whole lives,and#8221; said Jim Dill, Rotary Club of Truckee chairman of the event. and#8220;Initially, I was only going to run the event until my daughter was 12, but I want to continue because it puts so many smiles on peopleand#8217;s faces.and#8221;
The Nevada County Fish and Game Commission will stock 1,200 pounds of fish from the Nimbus Dam Hatchery in Folsom. Truckee Noon Rotary will provide 600 additional pounds of trophy-sized fish from a private Mount Lassen hatchery.
Volunteers are needed for the event. Anyone who knows how to fish is welcome to come out and help the young anglers. To volunteer, contact Dill at 448-6620.
