When preparing a package, gauge the fragility and value of the item being shipped. According to Carrie Ridgel, owner of The Office BOSS, the rule of thumb is to always wrap items in 2 to 4 inches of padding. Once the item is wrapped, pack it in a new box with no negative space (space for the item to move around). Shipping carriers may let you purchase insurance and ship packages in previously used boxes, but will not recognize claims for damaged packages shipped in a re-used box. If any damage does occur, take photos and save the damaged package. A common misconception is that a shipping carrier will always reimburse for damaged packages. Even if extra money is paid for insurance, the claim is at the discretion of the shipping carrier. The most important step to qualify for reimbursement of damages is to have items packaged professionally. The Office BOSS will package your items and ship them via the carrier of your choice: FedEx, USPS, DHL or UPS.

The Office BOSS sells quality packaging materials if you choose to do it yourself. Avoid waiting in long lines (and creating them) by having your items and/or package ready, address in hand and try to avoid peak hours.

The Office BOSS mailing center is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on weekends. For the peak shipping Saturdays of Dec. 15 and 22, The Office BOSS will be open extended hours, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Don’t get caught in the noon-1 p.m. weekday lunch rush if possible.

United States Postal Service, FedEx and UPS have suggested holiday mailing dates, but money-back guarantees are usually suspended for the last two weeks leading up to Christmas. The more urgent the delivery, the more money it will cost, so save time, money and stress by shipping early or at least by the suggested dates that guarantee delivery by Christmas. Some important carrier schedule notes for Dec. 24 include: FedEx Home Delivery does not deliver on Christmas Eve, and shipping options are limited, where most packages shipped with premium carriers on Christmas Eve will not be in transit until Dec. 26.
