Mayors for Meals: Supervisor Montgomery takes the wheel

Submitted to aedgett@sierrasun.comSupervisor Jennifer Montgomery drives and packs in hot meals to homebound seniors during a stormy Mayor for Meals day in March.

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Neither rain nor sleet or a winter storm warning could stop meals from being delivered by Supervisor Jennifer Montgomery in Placer County on March 23. Supervisor Montgomery delivered to homebound seniors as a collaborative effort across the country for the Mayors for Meals Campaign.

The national promotion enables politicians a special opportunity to deliver meals for participants promoting greater awareness for the growing number of seniors that are daily going to bed hungry across America. Approximately 9 million seniors face food scarcity issues. Sarah Hall Deardorff states, and#8220;We have been witnessing an alarming number of seniors who daily face the decision, do I eat or take my medication today.and#8221; Meals on Wheels Association (MOWAA) reports in the last two years 20 percent more seniors face a real threat of hunger in America.

According to Enid Borden, president for MOWAA, and#8220;Hunger is a disease, but we have a cure to end senior hunger today. We just need the courage to get it done.and#8221; Locally, individuals who are interested may help deliver a meal, provide companionship or assist with a seasonal treat we are all required to do: shovel out. Seniors often are not able to climb a roof, clear a propane tank or simply secure their front steps for safe travel back and forth. If you are able to assist with any extra time for a local friend or neighbor please donand#8217;t hesitate to call the Sierra Senior Services office to find a new buddy to help. For any additional information regarding meals, activities or the menu please visit or call 530-550-7600.
