Music Series returns to Truckee
Summer in Truckee brings sun, outdoor activities and, of course, the Summer Music Series.
The Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District has hosted the Summer Music Series since 1993, bringing an eclectic mix of bands to Truckee every Wednesday during the summer – for free.
The Music Series kicked off June 18 with the Deckheads, and continues through Aug. 27. All the concerts are held at the “Salty” Gebhardt Amphitheater at Truckee River Regional Park on Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Bands like Bob Mora and the Third Degree (a blues band playing July 2), 1888 (acoustic rock, July 9), Ridin’ High (country rock and roll, Aug. 6) and Dej^ Vu (rock and roll oldies, Aug. 27) are just of the few of the 11 very different bands that will grace the beautiful, scenic stage.
“I’m looking forward to No Bad Barley because it’s bluegrass,” Recreation Superintendent Dan O’Gorman said.
The Summer Music Series employs the help of local sponsors for each concert to be able to put on the free shows, Dan O’Gorman said that the sponsors don’t cover the whole show – the district still subsidizes the concerts.
Also, O’Gorman said that the bands don’t make much either, they are just there to play some music for the people of Truckee. The people seem to love it, too, as O’Gorman said they get approximately 800-1500 people for each show.
“It really is a special event,” O’Gorman said. “This is the place to be on a Wednesday night.” One reason why it is so great, he said, is that it’s a great place for families to enjoy the beautiful summer weather and the great music.
The Summer Music Series is open to all ages and is held at Truckee River Regional Park on Highway 267. For more information, call the Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District at 582-7720, or visit http://www.tdrpd.com.
