My Turn: Decline the recall

My Turn

Keep a curious mind, a light heart, and an optimistic attitude. Currently voters are being asked to sign a petition to hold a Special Election to recall three members of the Tahoe Truckee School Board.

While we may not agree with all of the School Board’s decisions, we elected them and they have not done anything illegal.

The Board has made organizational decisions while following their stated goals of providing a Diverse and Rigorous Program and Fiscal Accountability. The Board received considerable public input over a long period of time before making the school re-organization plan. The goals of the School Board do not include providing classrooms close to the home of each student, which seems to be sparking the recall effort.

Keep in mind: in order to get a recall on the ballot, more than 3,400 signatures of registered voters are required and a recall will cost the School District $60,000 to $100,000 ($4 to $6 per registered voter) at a time when they are struggling with a four million dollar shortfall. This money should be used for student programs.

If the community doesn’t agree with the direction of the School District, every effort should be made to present School Board candidates who have a solid and complete platform for the 2010 election.

It is difficult to find qualified and willing candidates for public office. Board members donate many, many hours and make many sacrifices to public service because they care. We don’t need to thank their earnest efforts with a demoralizing, expensive and reactive recall. A recall is not the answer and is seldom a good thing. Please decline to sign a petition recall School District Trustee.
