My Turn: Gifts for Good " Step up to the plate

With the dramatic upheaval in the economic status of our country, most of us have been affected one way or another. Even those with security (read cash) are hesitant to spend freely as long as confidence in the markets is uncertain. Businesses across the board have felt the impacts, and our community is certainly feeling it.

One friend of mine, who is financially secure, stated that he recognizes the need to support the economy but doesn’t want to be the first one to do so. Fortunately, not all in a strong position feel that way, and there are numerous in our community who are stepping to the plate to support those in need. Human resources are being tapped to the max as more and more families are impacted by loss of work ” no job at all or reduced hours.

We cannot count on a few to support the many. If all of us give a little, the dollars will add up to help those less fortunate make it through this stressful time. As the snow flies, jobs open up, visitors come, houses are rented, and demand for allied businesses such as restaurants and stores increase, some of the financial strain will be reduced.

However, the financial challenge we face will not go away over night. Even with a boost that we hope to see in the next few weeks, there will be many hanging on the edge and some slipping off. Our community is made up of wonderful, hard working individuals and families who want to work and support themselves.

There’s a great saying: “Feed a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he’ll eat forever,” or something like that. Our families need our support now to get them through this difficult time. As financial challenges mount, domestic violence escalates, putting additional pressure on social services.

Please, give what you can to this year’s Gifts for Good, sponsored by the Sierra Sun and Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation.
