My Turn: Sierra College campus work in full swing

I am happy to report that the publics Measure H tax dollars are hard at work right now, putting up our new Sierra College campus on McIver Hill.Im sure youre aware of the visible activity currently under way on Donner Pass Road and up on the hill. This, however, is only part of the picture. Our Project Team, faculty, Citizens Oversight Committee, community members and the Town of Truckee have been working diligently for several years to get to this construction point. We are extremely excited about our future college. Not only will the new college expand academic, certificate and enrichment opportunities, it will serve as a hub of activity and interaction for the community. At its April 5 meeting, the Truckee Town Council listened intently as we outlined timber harvest, infrastructure, road and trail construction plans, architectural design, as well as detailed information on current and future programming opportunities for the new Tahoe Truckee campus. We appreciated the time and careful consideration they gave us. We wish to acknowledge and thank Mayor Richard Anderson and all the council members for their unanimous endorsement that evening. We will continue to with work town staff and provide progress reports to the council as the project advances. We are committed to going over and above whats required to involve the town and the larger community in our process in order to make this campus a place we can all be proud of.In terms of actual site work and progress, the timber harvest is mostly complete, a temporary road has been constructed, Best Management Practices for erosion control have been installed on the property and surveying is being done. The traffic delays that the project is currently creating have to do with a new water line being installed. Thank you for your patience as we get through this phase. The water line will alleviate the need for an above-ground water storage tank that had originally been proposed for McIver Hill. Design and alignment have been completed for the multipurpose trail that will span the propertys full length from east to west and complete a vital segment of Truckees Trails & Bikeways Master Plan. This trail, in conjunction with the 73-acre conservation easement granted to the Truckee Donner Land Trust during the purchase of the property by the college, will help make our Tahoe Truckee campus a unique place to be enjoyed by all. In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our official groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Aug.6, time and location to be determined. You can keep up to date on this and all campus activities by visiting us online at http://www.sierracollege.edu/AboutUs/campuses/tt/index.html.Thanks for your ongoing support of Sierra College and your patience during our construction phase.Dave Ferrari, a lifelong resident of Kings Beach, is the Area 2 Sierra College trustee.
