My Turn: Sky-high Truckee parking is trickery
Last week a group of us drove up to Lake Tahoe. Usually, we cross over to Highway 50 and Sacramento, but this time we decided to drive Highway 80 and stop in Truckee. After having lunch and spending a considerable amount of money in the shops and businesses in your town, we found a $35 parking ticked on our vehicle. At first we though it was a mistake. We checked to be sure we hadnt parked in a handicapped spot. No, that wasnt the problem. There werent any curbside meters to feed. We didnt understand why we received the ticket. Finally, I looked up. There 10 or 12 feet up in the air I noticed the signage with parking information. Who is going to look up that high? Only a professional basketball player can see that information. After that, I had difficulty even finding the parking permit machine and found that it used only a debit card (Thats appropriate). The machines are hidden next to brick pillars. Were very upset about this ticket and want each Truckee council member to know that we feel that the individual council members who allowed and supported this sky-high idea to be implemented are into trickery and deceit. Each council member lacks personal integrity and personal responsibility by allowing the parking information to be up so high.We understand that the town depends on visitors and tourists to help pay for city improvements. Visitors and tourists are willing to pay for parking, but come clean and post the parking information front and center at eye level for all visitors to see and then go after the delinquents. Each council member must develop integrity and assume personal responsibility on this issue if the Town of Truckee is going to improve and achieve their goal of supporting the downtown core. You are killing it.Parking information should be at eye level, perhaps in front of the brick pillars or free standing along the curb so it is visible to all visitors. In the long run, you are hurting the businesses, shops and the Town of Truckee by supporting sky-high parking signage. Truckee is not visitor friendly. All I can say is that we wont be visiting Truckee for a long time, and your town and businesses will suffer. Truckee has enough of our money. We will be sure to tell everyone we know not to stop in Truckee on their way to or from Lake Tahoe.Sharon Sullivan is from San Jose and consults in guest services.
