My Turn: You stepped up " $100,000 worth

Lisa Dobey
CEO, Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation

A charitable donation of $25 or $100 feels a little insignificant when our government is talking about billions of dollars in bailouts. But combine your “insignificant” donation with those of many of our neighbors and it adds up to more than $100,000.

Over the past six weeks, full and part- time locals didn’t lose sight of others who may be less fortunate. While each of us may feel poorer this year, we still acknowledged there are those with greater needs.

Gifts for Good is a partnership between the Sierra Sun, Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation, and our community-at-large to raise money for nonprofit organizations in the region. It’s a way of making it easy for people to give ” write one check and most nonprofit organizations in the region benefit.

Thanks to each of you who contributed to the campaign. The Sierra Sun promotes the campaign through articles, editorials, and advertising. Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation covers all of the administrative expense and the Foundation’s grants committee, board, and staff carefully review each and every grant to make sure your dollars are put to good use. Every penny donated goes directly to a local charity to help that organization better meet its mission.

I remain in awe each year at the generosity of our community. The first year the campaign was held ” in 2003 ” it garnered $27,930. And, this year, even in the midst of an economic downturn worse than most of us have ever seen, we raised $100,000. That generosity denies all the cynicism and pessimism that sometimes sneaks into our daily life.

People really do care. They care about their neighbors and their neighbors’ children. They recognize that our community is comprised of real people with real needs and even in the midst of the beautiful community there is the reality of poverty among us. Truckee Tahoe is made up of so many people who are passionate about our environment and the people who live here. And we’re willing to put our time and our money into making sure that we take care of our own.

This is such a giving community.
