Nevada County Has a Rare Opportunity — It’s Time to Stand Together Behind One of Our Own (Opinion)

Every once in a while, a community is presented with an opportunity that is bigger than party politics.

Nevada County has one of those opportunities. We live in a county built by generations of people who value independence, hard work, public service, agriculture, small businesses, personal responsibility, and a deep connection to the land around us.

We are also a county with strong opinions and different political beliefs. That is not a weakness, it is part of living in a free society. Healthy debate and disagreement have always been part of democracy. But strong communities also recognize moments when shared interests should rise above partisan divisions.

Robb Tucker’s campaign for California’s 3rd Congressional District represents one of those moments.

For the first time in many years, Nevada County has a realistic opportunity to send someone who lives here, understands our community, and understands rural Northern California to Washington, D.C.

That matters because having someone from Nevada County sitting at the table means having someone who understands our forests, our farms, our water systems, our businesses, our health care system, our families, our schools, and the challenges facing rural communities.

This is why I believe all current and former elected officials and community leaders throughout Nevada County should seriously consider publicly supporting and endorsing Robb Tucker for Congress, not because everyone will agree with him on every issue, but because Nevada County having a direct voice in Congress benefits our entire region.

That includes all current and former elected officials throughout Nevada County: members of the Nevada County Board of Supervisors, Nevada City and Grass Valley City Councils, Truckee representatives within our district, Nevada Irrigation District Board members, school board trustees, fire district directors, and others who have stepped forward to serve their communities.

It also includes agricultural organizations, the Nevada County Farm Bureau, the Economic Resource Council, business owners, nonprofit leaders, and community members committed to protecting the future of our county.

It also means recognizing the commitment of everyone who stepped forward during this election, including Supervisor Heidi Hall and others who were willing to put their names on a ballot and ask voters for their trust. Running for public office requires dedication, courage, and a willingness to serve.

Now is the opportunity to demonstrate that Nevada County’s future is bigger than any single election. I hope Supervisor Hall, along with other current and former elected leaders throughout our county, will consider publicly endorsing Robb Tucker and supporting the opportunity to have a Nevada County representative serving Congressional District 3.

Once voters have spoken, communities have a choice: continue focusing on political differences or come together around shared goals.

The challenges facing Nevada County are not Republican or Democratic problems, they are Nevada County problems, congressional district 3 problems, rural and urban California problems: the rising cost of living, housing, electricity, propane, fuel, utilities, health insurance, and homeowners insurance affects families regardless of political affiliation. These challenges impact young families trying to stay here, seniors living on fixed incomes, small businesses trying to survive, and future generations hoping to call Nevada County home.

Water is a perfect example. Affordable treated water for families and reliable raw water for agriculture are not partisan issues. Maintaining Nevada Irrigation District’s reservoirs, canals, and delivery systems, protecting existing storage, and planning for the future are investments previous generations understood were necessary to protect our rural way of life.

The next generation of water projects, whether improving existing reservoirs, increasing storage capacity, raising Rollins Reservoir, completing future storage projects like Centennial Reservoir, or modernizing aging infrastructure, cannot happen through local rate and ratepayers alone.

Projects of that size require partnerships, grants, and state and federal support. They require someone representing us who understands why rural water security matters.

Wildfire preparedness is another issue that should unite us. Healthy forests, vegetation management, responsible timber practices, defensible space, early emergency warning systems, evacuation planning, and adequate emergency corridors determine whether communities survive the next major event.

The same is true with homeowners insurance. Families throughout rural California are facing rising premiums or losing coverage entirely. This threatens homeownership, property values, retirement security, and the ability of working families to remain here.

Robb Tucker understands these issues because he has lived them. He was born and raised here. He built his career here. He helped operate a family business here. He raised his family here. And he chose public service here.

As a Nevada County Supervisor, he has experienced the difficult balance local leaders face: protecting public safety, supporting economic opportunity, preserving rural character, protecting agriculture, and the need for finding practical solutions.

At the national level, America also faces challenges requiring leaders willing to work toward solutions. We need a serious discussion about balancing the federal budget and controlling spending. We need bipartisan conversations about healthcare affordability. We need immigration reform that protects our borders while addressing the realities facing businesses, workers, and communities.

Supporting Robb Tucker does not require Republicans, Democrats, and independents to suddenly agree on everything. But we should be able to agree that having someone from Nevada County representing us in Congress creates an opportunity for our entire community.

We all want safer communities. We all want healthy forests. We all want reliable water. We all want affordable places to live. We all want reasonable utility costs. We all want our farms and small businesses to succeed. We all want our children and grandchildren to have a future here.

Nevada County’s elected officials and community leaders have an opportunity to send a powerful message that our shared future is more important than our political differences.

The future of Nevada County will not be built by division. It will be built by neighbors willing to find common ground, solve problems, and protect the place we all love.

Nevada County has a rare opportunity to send one of its own to Congress.

Let’s not miss it.
