New running track built

A new community 400-meter running track was completed around the recreation field next to Sierra Mountain Middle School last week, just before a fresh coat of snow covered it.

The Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District crews launched the track project into high gear and finished the 15-foot wide gravel track in just six weeks and are proud to announce the community can now have access to a flat, consistent running track.

“We wanted to provide a place for the recreational runner to go,” said Bob Bolton, TDRPD Park Superintendent. “Basically, the district wanted to be a part of health and wellness for the community.”

The Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District and the Town of Truckee assisted with the use of equipment for the project, which was very labor intensive.

“We’re very proud of the project and we’ll be proud of it for years to come,” Bolton said.

The Tahoe-Truckee High School track team can train on the track, and all schools will have physical education access to the track as well.

Because of the recent rain and snowfall, the track will most likely not be ready for running until next spring, the district reported. (Photo by Abby Hutchison)
