Noise abatement vs. safety at airport?

Bob Horvath
Truckee

Some noise abatement procedures are unsafe. I am all for reducing annoying aircraft sounds but not at the expense of safety. A few months back the airports noise committee asked pilots assembled at one of their meetings to comment on newly drafted noise abatement procedures.

By in large the recommendations were good except for two issues: A straight in approach from Brockway Summit direct to runway 28 (first runway you see as you drop down the summit). We objected to the very dangerous steep I mean steep approach over the tree tops. The Federal Aviation would not allow an instrument approach on this path due to its steepness. The other problem path was created by arrows of recommended flight directly opposing each other (head on).

We as pilots recommended that a professional flight path planner either approve or correct these and other recommended noise abatement flight paths. Many months later the dangerous recommendations still exist.

Why should a non pilot care about these and other procedures you ask? In a word liability.

The airport is about to spend a million plus money on a surveillance system to observe violators of the recommended flight paths. Fine, no stopping that, but at least the airport should get the paths approved by a professional so we aren’t contributing to a disaster. Tell your airport board member if you agree.
