North Lake Tahoe Business Associations say: and#8216;Shop Localand#8217; and and#8216;Eat Down the Streetand#8217;

Special to the Sun

TAHOE, Calif. and#8212; A few months ago you may have seen an article in the local media about the shopping locally and supporting your neighborhood merchants. More than 100 people turned in a Holiday Shop Local card to prove investment in the local communities. The North Lake Tahoe Business Associations would like to reiterate how much a few dollars spent in town, versus off the hill, means to the community.

From Thanksgiving to Christmas in 2010, the annual Holiday Shop Local Program card entries proved reinvestment of more than $20,000 at participating local North Shore businesses in Incline Village, Nev. Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista and Tahoe City.

and#8220;That’s a big impact to local merchants,and#8221; said Cheri Sprenger, executive director of the North Tahoe Business Association, which helped create and promote the program with the Tahoe City Downtown Association and Incline Community Business Association.

and#8220;It not only shows how much we all care about the economic vitality of our North Shore communities, it a reminder that $20 here and there goes a long way,and#8221; continued Sprenger.

According to statistics from Institute for Local Self-Reliance and a Civic Economics study in 2008 for every $100 spent in independently owned local stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. Apply that formula to the more than $20,000 spent during the holiday month, imagine the impact your dollars spent locally could and do have throughout the entire year.

As SnowFest! begins, we’re reminded of local traditions and the community bonds that tie us all together. Take a few extra minutes this week and next to walk in that shop you’ve never noticed; grab a bite in town at your favorite restaurant; and while the business associations know it’s hard, plan your day with a few extra minutes (and dollars) to explore the wonderful stores, boutiques, restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, merchants and more that make up our community.

It’s that easy. Put a few dollars back into your community and watch what happens!

Winners of the shop Local Program

The North Lake Tahoe Business Associations would also like to congratulate Jim and Dawn Gately, Sarah Lowis, Kathrine Hill and Amy Dillon as the winners of this year’s Holiday Shop Local Program prize drawing. Prizes included VIP tickets to business association events in Kings Beach, Incline Village and Tahoe City.

Celebrate and support the unique culture of the North Lake Tahoe communities.
