North Tahoe Arts’ Bizarre Bazaar

Special to the Sun

TAHOE CITY, Calif. and#8212;-North Tahoe Artsand#8217; Bizarre Bazaar is an uncommon rummage and art sale, Sunday, July 31, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Boatworks Mall, 740 N. Lake Blvd., Tahoe City. Find collectibles, clothing, tools, light fixtures, kitchen items and funky home decor, baskets, clothing, toys, and gently used art and art supplies. It is the summer fundraiser for North Tahoe Arts. The funds raised from this endeavor will be used for Kids Art Saturdays, Senior Art and Middle School Art programs in 2012.

The three programs spotlighted for funding address needs of a community heavy on recreation choices. Creativity and the arts add a different, but just as important, dimension to the community.

Kids Art Saturdays is a free program where youths may work with an artist for a few hours on a Saturday and complete a project. The Kids Art Saturday program saw an increase in attendance this year of more than 30 percent. Senior Art is another free program that gives senior citizens the opportunity to work with artists on an artistic endeavor. It began with arts and crafts and now offers water painting classes in Truckee. This program will hopefully expand to Tahoe City. The Senior Art program in 2011 had an enrollment increase of 60 percent over 2010. Middle School Art has been a goal of NTA since 2009, but the program has not been built or found an instructor. The goal, with funding, is to be able to accomplish this in 2012.

North Tahoe Arts (NTA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. Its mission is to support the arts in the Tahoe Truckee region. This is accomplished through the various programs of NTA. Artists have opportunities to exhibit their work in our galleries, which usually change monthly and can participate in ARTour, an open studio tour. Artists who are ready to focus on selling their work can ask to be juried into our Artisan Shop. These artists keep the building open by their volunteering to work a day or two a month. North Tahoe Plein Air is another of our annual events and a fundraiser for NTA and the Truckee Donner Land Trust. It attracts artists from California and other western states. A Gathering of Art is another free program for artists to work together and discuss their challenges and triumphs. It meets on the first and third Wednesdays of the month.
