North Tahoe celebrated International Womenand#8217;s Day with a panel discussion on the education for girls

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; The world celebrated the 100th anniversary of International Womenand#8217;s Day March 8. Tahoe Womenand#8217;s Services commemorated the event with a discussion panel on and#8220;The Importance of Education for Girls to Flourish as Women, internationally and locally.and#8221; Discussion centered on the how educated girls can strengthen communities and diminish violence. Tahoe Womenand#8217;s Services would like to thank the panelists for their insight and participation: Barbara Shaw, Monica Caldari, Paul Bancroft, Jennifer Gurecki, Chief Nick Sensley, and moderator Shannon Beets. The agency extends a special thank you to Sierra Nevada College and the collaborative support they provided for this event.

and#8220;The panel was instrumental in showcasing that violence against women happens in many forms and crosses all boundaries, whether you are a person living in picturesque Tahoe, or a poor girl living in the African nation of Kenya,and#8221; said Karen Carey, executive director of Tahoe Womenand#8217;s Services. and#8220;Our panelists discussed how education of girls was the key to ending prevailing social issues like poverty, hunger, disease, and violence.and#8221;

Keynote speaker Barbara Shaw discussed the importance of education among girls and the huge impact it has on the literacy, health and economic well-being of Maasai women in Kenya and their families. Shaw brought this point home by highlighting statistics that show 90 percent of educated Maasai girls will continue to financially support their families compared to 30 percent of educated Maasai men. Shaw is the founding president, executive director, and treasurer of the Maasai Girls Education Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating a generation of Maasai girls in Kenya.



The event drew close to 100 men and women from our community with an interest in educating our youth to build a better tomorrow. Thank you for coming out to support Tahoe Womenand#8217;s Services in its mission to end violence in families, communities and interpersonal relationships. Tahoe Womenand#8217;s Services is a community-based organization providing direct services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and other individuals in crisis. Tahoe Womenand#8217;s Services is currently the only agency providing assistance to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the North Lake Tahoe/Truckee region of California and Nevada. Tahoe Womenand#8217;s Services provides the community with confidential support through our 24-hour Help Line, legal advocacy, a safe house, a childrenand#8217;s program, support groups and a violence prevention program. All information and services are available to men, women and children in English and Spanish.
