North Tahoe designer earns certification in green building

Submitted to aedgett@sierrasun.comDale Munsterman has been named a Certified Passive House Consultant, in keeping with the Munsterman Group LLC company philosophy.

CARNELIAN BAY, Calif. and#8212; The Munsterman Group LLC is pleased to announce that company president Dale Munsterman has been named a Certified Passive House Consultant by the Passive House Institute US (PHIUS) and the PassivHaus Institute (PHI) in Germany. The certification resulted from an intensive training, testing and certification process that took nearly a full year to complete.

Passive House is a building design approach that relies on a combination of energy efficiency, passive solar, and internal heat gains to eliminate the need for a conventional HVAC system. The concept is implemented through stringent performance standards for airtightness and energy consumption, along with advanced thermal-bridge free design techniques, and verified with a field-tested energy-modeling program. The Passive House approach is the most advanced building efficiency standard in the world, with the promise of reducing the energy consumption of buildings by up to 80 percent while providing superior comfort and indoor air quality.

In Germany and throughout Europe, where the standard was developed in the mid-90s, there are already about 25,000 housing units built to the Passive House standard. Relatively new to the United States, the number of completed projects are fewer than 100, with several hundred more in design and under construction. In California, there are roughly 25 design, engineering, or building professionals who have achieved the Certified Passive House Consultant certification, with Munsterman being the first consultant certified from the Sierra region.

Dale Munsterman, company President, notes, and#8220;This is not your Fatherand#8217;s passive solar technology. Passive House represents the cutting-edge; an incredibly precise way to plan, design and model a buildingand#8217;s energy use, creating super-efficient structures. When coupled with renewable energy systems, such as solar and solar thermal, Passive House technology puts true zero energy buildings within reach. This process meshes well with our company philosophy and I am anxious to present Passive House concepts to area homeowners looking for a more sustainable and efficient way to build or remodel.and#8221;

Don Rogers: Big news hits close to home

First, thank you for the quick notes, some so quick that the breaking news we’d been sold had barely made it online. I read a handful of well-wishes, what’s-going-on, you-OK emails and texts while still…
