TAHOE CITY, Calif. and#8212; True to the character of Tahoeand#8217;s community and people, a volunteer effort lead to the repair of Tahoe Cityand#8217;s flag pole just in time for Veteranand#8217;s Day. On Oct. 24 a blustery storm blew through Tahoe and destroyed the flagpole rope which held Tahoe Cityand#8217;s U.S. and California flags. Originally constructed as a project of the Tahoe City Rotary Club, the flag pole was erected as a volunteer effort in 2002. Tahoe city Public Utility District has maintained it since.

The repair to the top of the 60and#8217; flag pole would mean a renting a lift and possibly $2,000 of local funds. With Veterans Day quickly approaching Bob Bolton, Director of Parks and Recreation for TCPUD contacted Chief Duane Whitelaw to ask for help. and#8220;North Tahoe Fire Protection District doesnand#8217;t have a ladder truck, but I contacted Chief Mark Shadowens at Northstar and they were willing to assist.and#8221;

With North Tahoe and Northstar Fire on-site, the ladder truck arrived and the repairs were made. Another local volunteer, electrician Ed Beauchamp, volunteered to assist with replacing the light fixture on top of the pole. and#8220;It was incredible to have everyone volunteer and help so quickly so that the flag was back in place for Veterans Day,and#8221; Bolton commented.
