Note from the editor: Changes in store for the Sun

I’m a firm believer that change is a good thing. It’s what keeps things from going stale. It’s what can introduce us to something refreshing and different. And, in terms of overseeing a community newspaper, it’s a way for us to better celebrate our businesses and residents.

With these thoughts in mind, I wanted to let our loyal readers know of a few changes happening this week to the print edition of the Sierra Sun.

First, we’re moving Wednesday’s Health & Wellness section farther up, in front of Opinion. Whether you’re an active adult seeking information on advances in medicine and procedures; a recreation enthusiast looking for exercises to increase muscle and joint stability; a young adult seeking mental health advice; or someone looking for the best Reiki or yoga classes and techniques in the area, our goal is to provide more focus on this important section of Wednesday’s newspaper so our entire community is informed.

There’s also the spiritual and astrological side of things that play a role in many of our residents’ healthy lifestyles. This Wednesday, we are introducing a weekly horoscopes column in the health section, “Free Will Astrology,” by syndicated columnist Rob Brezsny, described as an aspiring master of curiosity and perpetrator of sacred uproar. Brezsny is credited as the first to use a first-person narrative as part of weekly horoscopes, and critics hail his astrology and literary work as quirky, thought-provoking and eye-opening — in a nutshell, you’ve never seen horoscopes like this.

Two other changes are in store. First, in the same vein as increasing a focus on Health & Wellness, we’ll also be providing more exposure to our Business section. Each Friday, the section will include our Meet Your Merchant feature, in which we tell the story behind one of several hundred local businesses that power the economy in Truckee and throughout the North Shore. In the past, this feature has run on Page 2. Also moving to the business section is Truckee-based Registered Investment Advisor Ken Roberts’ Market Beat column, offering all-things financial advice and thoughts on the stock market’s impacts on local residents and readers.

Lastly, Friday also marks the launch of Sierra Snapshots, an all-user submitted photo page that captures the essence of what it means to be a member of our communities. Look for this page every week and check out the amazing images your neighbors are capturing — and learn how you, too, can get published.

We are excited to bring about these changes and additions to the Sierra Sun. We hope you enjoy them as well.
