Note from the editor: Sierra Sun-Bonanza election letters policy
It’s election season yet again, and as our local races gain steam toward the Nov. 8 general election, we want to make sure readers are aware of the newspapers’ policy regarding election-related letters to the editor.
In addition to the Sierra Sun and North Lake Tahoe Bonanza’s standard policy for editorial-page submissions, we have the following guidelines for election-related letters.
The opinion pages are a forum for comments on candidates and political issues. However, we will not publish personal attacks, and we reserve the right to limit the number of rebuttals. We also strive our best to fact check each submission.
If a letter is written as part of a campaign, the affiliation must be clearly stated. If a letter is written by an elected official or a candidate for election, his or her affiliation must be clearly stated.
Limit for a letter is 300 words. My Turn/Guest Column submissions hold a 700-word limit. Letters will be prioritized, and columns will take a backseat and run the risk of not publishing due to space and time limitations.
Political letters for the Nov. 8 general election will not be printed after the Wednesday, Nov. 2, print edition of the Sierra Sun — including online at SierraSun.com — unless deemed necessary for a reply to a previous issue.
For the Bonanza, letters will not be printed after the Thursday, Oct. 27, print edition — including online at SierraSun.com — unless deemed necessary for a reply to a previous issue.
The Sierra Sun publishes Wednesday and Friday. Generally, items should be emailed for consideration a week previous (or more) for desired publication date. Absolute drop-dead deadline for consideration is Friday noon for Wednesday’s edition, and Monday noon for Friday’s edition.
For the Bonanza, the absolute drop-dead deadline for consideration is Monday noon for Thursday’s edition.
As a reminder, these deadlines are for consideration only, and do not guarantee an item will be published.
Questions about this policy may be emailed to Editor Kevin MacMillan at firstname.lastname@example.org.
