Note from the Superintendent: Celebrating what’s right in Tahoe-Truckee

Rob Leri
Note from the Superintendent

We’ve just finished our first full month of school, and we have a lot to celebrate. Below is a list of highlights of celebrating what’s right in Tahoe-Truckee:

Each of our schools hosted very informative and worthwhile Back to School nights with wonderful participation from our parents and families.

Our amazing educational partner, Excellence in Education, is celebrating their 30th Anniversary this year, which means celebrating 30 years of supporting TTUSD. We are so grateful for all that this foundation has done for our students, teachers, and our district. Over the past 30 years, they have contributed over $3.1 million towards educational programs to enhance the educational experience for all of our students. Thank you Excellence in Education!

I had the pleasure of spending time at Sagehen again this year. Sagehen offers such a special outdoor educational experience for all of our fifth grade students and we are so fortunate to have this wonderful program for our scholars. A very special thank you goes out to the coordinators of the program — Candy Blesse, Kathy Echols and Katie Old. None of this would happen without these three amazing people! Additionally, I want to acknowledge and thank the Shane McConkey Foundation for their generous support of this program and all of the other community organizations that help sustain this opportunity for our scholars!

Congratulations to Sierra High for launching their new Career Technical Education (CTE) course, Introduction to Public Safety. The class is under way and going strong with a total of 10 high school students enrolled, including students from North Tahoe High, Truckee High, and Sierra High.

A highlight of my week is on Wednesday when I visit our schools. While I haven’t made it to all of our schools yet, every Wednesday Dr. Fal Asrani and I visit our schools and classrooms and will continue to do this throughout the year. So far, we have had the opportunity to visit Alder Creek Middle School, Donner Trail Elementary, Glenshire Elementary, Sierra High School, Truckee Elementary, and Truckee High School. We’ve seen outstanding teaching and learning underway with effective instruction, engaged students, and good responses to questions. Thanks for all you all do for our scholars!

Our district is participating in this month’s National Bullying Prevention Month. At TTUSD, we are committed to providing our students with a safe, positive, respectful school environment that is free of intimidation and harassment. We have various programs underway throughout the school year to address and eliminate bullying in our schools.

Also in October, we celebrate the Week of the School Administrator. A critical element in Tahoe Truckee’s excellence is its leadership: the school principals and assistant principals, special education leaders, and district administrators. The Week of the School Administrator presents a great opportunity to honor our leadership team.

October is California School Bus Safety Awareness Month. TTUSD’s transportation takes great pride in providing the highest level of safety for our scholars and recognizing school bus safety month is an opportunity to remind motorists to take extra precautions to drive carefully and observe proper road rules around schools and school buses. During the week of October 17-21, our district will be practicing school bus evacuation drills at each school site.
